Talk in Primary...and first time breaking something big that is going to be a pain in the you-know-what to fix.
Today, Tyler (and I) gave Tyler's first talk in Primary. It was about the Temple being a house of God. Tyler has always loved temples so we printed out pictures of all the temples he's been to with the idea that he could tell a little bit about each one. Well, I got to tell a little bit about each one and he stood there and smiled ;) But he was a trooper.
After church the boys are always a bit obnoxious because they are tired, grumpy, and hungry. While playing outside Tyler got a bit too sassy and closed the sliding glass door with a little too much drama, breaking the lock and locking he and Jacob outside. At this point, they lost it and started bawling (since they didn't realize we could go through the gate to get them). It was kind of funny and really frustrating because this will not be an easy fix at all. I'm sure this is the first of many things like broken windows, holes in the wall, slamming doors, dents in cars, etc. Tyler felt really bad once he calmed down and offered all of his money (about $10) to help fix the door. He's also going to collect the inside trash and brush his teeth 2x a day every day to earn some more money to help pay for whatever needs done. (yes, I realize it will still be my money going to use, but it's the principle)
For all his silly antics, he has turned into my best advocate for good and such an incredible ally to Jacob. Not to say he's perfect or he isn't the one starting the trouble at least half of the time, but Tyler is listening when it is really important, taking discipline so much better, and sticking up for his little brother when my punishment might be a little too harsh. My favorite was when (can't believe I'm admitting this in writing) Jacob had been such a terror that he got put on time-out in the garage because he just wouldn't stay anywhere and that was the only place with a lock on my side of the door. I was getting dinner ready and just kind of zoned out the screaming from the garage so Tyler asked if he could check on Jacob yet. I told him, "no" because Jake was on time-out. Tyler repied with, "But I'm his brother. I'm supposed to take care of him." Lesson learned, go ahead and check on your brother. Then Tyler opens the door and I hear him ask Jacob if he's done screaming and once Jake starts screaming again Tyler says, "oh! guess you have to stay in time-out." then he closes and locks the door again ;) At least the intentions were good!
